Meghalaya College Teachers' Association is organising the 13th R. R. Thomas Memorial Inter College Debate Competition on the motion "The Rise of Social Media Influencers is Good for Society" to be held on 11 April 2025 at 1:00 PM at Synod College Auditorium. Important Information:
- The Secretary of the respective unit will fill in the details for the two participants.
- The details that will be required to fill up this form will be:
- The names, the college, and the contact numbers of the participants.
- The name and contact numbers of the accompanying teachers.
- The option of which the participants prefer: “For” or “Against” wherein each participant chooses whether she/he will be “Speaker 1” from the “For” team and Speaker 2 from the “Against”.
- The deadline for all registrations by the 4th of April 2025.
Debate Rules and Regulations:
- The debate consists of the treasury and the opposition side.
- Each college may send two participants to the competition. One allotted to the treasury and one allotted to the opposition side.
- Each participant will be allotted a number whereby the Treasury members will all be assigned odd numbers while the Opposition will be assigned even numbers.
- The participants cannot announce their names or the name of their college during any part of the competition.
- The participants may only address through the speaker.

The debate will consist of three rounds:
At the start, the treasury and the opposition will choose their team leader.
R1: The affirmative round - Each participant will be given exactly 4 mins to present their points and arguments and evidences. In this round, rebuttal against the points presented by the participants of the other side is strictly forbidden. A warning bell will sound at 3 mins. Final double bell will sound at 4 mins.
The leader of the treasury will start to be followed by the leader of the opposition. After that, the participants may come one after the other to speak.
R2: The rebuttal round – Each participant will be given exactly 3 mins for rebuttal to counter the points that were presented in R1. A warning bell will sound at 2 and a half mins. Final double bell will sound at 3 mins.
Again, the leader of the treasury will start to be followed by the leader of the opposition. After that, the participants may come one after the other to speak.
R3: Only the respective team leaders will speak for 3 mins each. No points can be scored in this round.
- Three prizes will be awarded based on the scores of Round 1 and Round 2
- Best speaker (₹ 5000/-)
- Second best speaker (₹ 3000/-)
- Third best speaker (₹ 2000/-)
Referring from sheets, notes and chits while speaking is not allowed. However, the participants have the liberty to note down any point(s) for argument while on their seats.
Use of explicit and discriminatory language in any form will render a disqualification.
The decision of the judges is final and binding.
